Davidson County Airport

Nestled just outside of Lexington, Davidson County Airport (KEXX) is one of those classic general aviation gems that perfectly blends accessibility, Southern charm, and a pilot-friendly atmosphere. Whether you’re dropping in for a quick fuel stop or planning a weekend visit, KEXX delivers a laid-back experience with just enough activity to keep things interesting. Highlights Pilot-Friendly Layout KEXX features a well-maintained 5,004-foot runway (6/24), making it ideal for everything from training aircraft to larger piston singles and light twins. The approach is straightforward, and the surrounding terrain is forgiving—great for both newer pilots and seasoned flyers. ⛽ Affordable Fuel & Easy Access Self-serve fuel is typically competitively priced, making it a popular fuel stop in central North Carolina. The ramp is easy to navigate, with ample tie-down space and minimal congestion compared to busier metro airports. 🍔 Close to Lexington BBQ You’re minutes away from the barbecue capital of North Carolina. A quick ride into town gets you access to iconic local spots—perfect for turning a routine flight into a $100 hamburger run. 🛩️ Active GA Community KEXX has a strong local pilot presence, with flight training, hangar activity, and frequent casual gatherings. It’s the kind of place where someone will strike up a conversation on the ramp Brief History Davidson County Airport has served the Lexington and Davidson County area for decades as a key hub for general aviation. Originally developed to support local business travel and agricultural aviation, the airport steadily expanded alongside the region’s growth. Over the years, KEXX has evolved into a reliable GA reliever airport, supporting: Flight training operations Corporate and personal aviation Emergency and medical support flights Despite modernization efforts—including runway improvements and upgraded facilities—it has retained its small-town aviation feel, which is increasingly rare today. Events KEXX primarily hosts community-driven aviation activities: Informal fly-ins and pilot gatherings Occasional pancake breakfasts or local fundraisers Ongoing flight training activity Event schedules vary, so checking with the airport or local groups ahead of time is recommended. Why Visit KEXX offers straightforward access, affordable fuel, and a welcoming aviation community. Its location and relaxed atmosphere make it an ideal short trip for pilots in the Carolinas.

"We started CAN with humble intentions - a family friendly social network to connect with like-minded aviation enthusiasts without any of the negative aspects often found in other aviation social media groups. CAN has exceeded all expectations while remaining true to its founding principles. A great reputation is an enviable and yet fragile thing. CAN stands as a model for the best of things in general aviation! It is THE organization to join… an association in which you can be proud to be a member! "

"CAN is an amazing organization on so many different levels. But to me personally, when I think of CAN, I think of HOPE! As a member of 9A9, I along with everyone else there had our dreams shattered when Hurricane Helene came through and submerged our beautiful airport under 10’ of water and mud... Hopeless, that is how we felt. Within days our useless runway was becoming useful again as “big tire” planes from a CAN supported drive began bringing supplies to our town! That hopeless feeling that our beloved airport was gone began to turn to hope as we saw purpose again. Then CAN came through yet again bringing supplies, donations, and boots on the ground helping us reopen 9A9 and come back better than ever! They have supported us without fail since and forever will hold a special place in my heart! A debt we could never repay, and thanks to CAN, we aren’t expected too. Thats the organization CAN is! When they call it the CAN family, family is exactly what it is. "
