CAN was created by pilots in the Carolinas in 2021 to connect local members of the General Aviation community in North and South Carolina.
The network began on Facebook and quickly grew, now with well over 4,500 members and more joining every day. We are thrilled that the local flying community has embraced CAN and we look forward to the exciting developments ahead.
Feel free to reach out via our ‘Contact Us’ page, directly in the Facebook group, or to any of the directors, administrators, or volunteers listed below. Thanks for visiting our website and we hope to see you in the sky soon!

President of CAN
Erica Zangwill began her flight training (unconventionally) in a ‘46 Aeronca Champ, earning her tailwheel first, then transitioning to a Cessna 172 to finish up her private pilot. Immediately after, she started instrument training in a club Mooney M20J. To complete all of the required hours, she took a two-week-long 7,331 nm trip around the perimeter of the entire United States in the Mooney with her husband as her safety pilot. Erica, her husband, and 2-year-old son live at NC26 with their Comanche 260B and Aeronca 7DC Champ.
Bill had been flying since the mid-80’s when he learned in a then brand new C152. While never a professional pilot, he has amassed time in 99 different makes and models of single engine land aircraft and is looking for something special to check off #100. In that time, he has been involved with the EAA as a technical advisor, chapter director, and finally chapter president. Bill has also served as the State Liaison for the Recreational Aviation Foundation. He has been a contributing editor for KitPlanes magazine for over 10 years where he’s written flight reviews and technical articles. You may find him flying the RV-9 he built with the help of his wife Nora. The RV-9 is older than his son Turner, who often accompanies him on flights around the Carolinas.
Jim developed a passion for aviation later in life, regretting not pursuing it earlier. He now flies a Hatz CB-1 biplane and is restoring a Cessna 172E for adventurous off-airport excursions and camping trips. When not in the sky, he serves as the Regional Director at the National Auto Sport Association, operating events at racetracks all over the southeast.
Originally from Birmingham, AL, Bobby has called SC home since 2009. He has been flying on and off since the early 90s, anchored by a lifelong passion for aviation. He holds an instrument rating and operates out of KFDW (Fairfield, SC). Bobby has flown in and around various locations, including the Hawaiian Islands, KS, and NM. His Grumman AA1C TCat, fondly named ‘Holly,’ has enabled a lifetime of memories. A retired veteran with service in both the Air Force and Army, Bobby’s second passion lies in business finance. He just joined the SC Department of Veterans Affairs as Chief Financial Officer. Additionally, he owns a small drone tech company.
A native of Charlotte NC, Joel has been flying since 2015 when he got his fixed wing pilot license. Joel went on to get his rotorcraft endorsement in 2020 and got the crazy idea to build his own helicopter. Joel went on to take his helicopter to EAA Airventure in Oshkosh and won the Lindy Champion award in 2022. An active member of EAA Chapter 309, Joel flies out of Lake Norman Airpark (14A). When not flying around, Joel is the Director of Cyber Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology for a financial services company.
